John Williams

John Williams, associate professor of art, was born in Seoul, South Korea, to a Korean mother and an American father. He was raised and schooled in Southern California.
He attended White Memorial Adventist Elementary, San Gabriel Academy, Loma Linda University, and Art Center College of Design where he earned his Bachalor of Fine Arts in illustration. Upon graduation, he left for the East Coast where the editorial illustration market offered greater opportunities. He has worked as a freelance illustrator since 1988 with clients on both coasts.
Williams also worked as a staff illustrator for the Review and Herald Publishing Association in Hagerstown, Maryland. While living in Maryland, he began teaching at Columbia Union College. He then pursued his Masters of Fine Arts in painting at Claremont Graduate School in California. While there, he taught at La Sierra University. After completing his graduate studies, he returned to Maryland where he became the graphic arts coordinator at Columbia Union College.
Williams moved to Tennessee and began teaching at Southern in 2002. He is married to Lizette Mendoza-Williams (a graphic designer) and they have a son named Zane, who was born in May of 2002, and a daughter named Sophia, who was born in September of 2003.
