Our Philosophy

“The Times are Changing; Join the Digital Revolution”

The greatest occupational strength of the School of Visual Art and Design’s program is the realization and application that today’s artistic communicators need a command of art and technology. The lines between print, interactive media, motion graphics, film, and the World Wide Web are merging, flowing together in concert for maximum impact. To not realize this is to be left behind.

For example a Southern student in graphic design, if taking the courses offered, can graduate not only being an effective communicator in print, editorial, and advertising design but also they can think conceptually, edit film, design a website, and produce interactive motion graphics. His or her value to an employer is greatly enhanced.

Yet, a unique perspective at the School of Visual Art and Design sets it apart: creativity is a gift—a gift from the Ultimate Creator, the source of true creativity. Students are encouraged to reflect on that paradigm and realize the incredible potential for good that an artist has in this high-powered era of mass communications. A Christian artist or designer can make a difference in his or her environment, whether the individual works directly in Christian media or at a secular advertising agency or studio. As Michelangelo said centuries ago, “The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.”

In the mid 1400s Johan Gutenberg and the invention of movable type revolutionized printing and communication throughout civilization. The results impacted the world: ideas and information were shared on a mass basis and scripture became available to the common man.
